I’m moving to a house with no internet coverage except mobile internet. (3G). While 3G coverage is pretty good in the area, and we have very good speed on 3G here (up to 10.2Mbit/s), I’m wondering if there are products out there that are a better option for home use than the little 3G “mokkula” (stick) that comes with a subscription?
It’s for home use only, so are there any good 3G router/modems? How about signal boosters? Is there anything else I should know?
If you have experience in these areas I’d love to hear from you.
(and no, no chance of wired internet, sadly).
You can get this from verkkokauppa http://www.verkkokauppa.com/popups/prodinfo.php?id=14057
I am on 3G connection too, for about two years now. Not that wired internet is not available here, but I am moving from place to place frequently and I am no heavy downloader, so mobile internet connection is right for me. At home I use very old laptop without battery as my router, so I just connect my 3G modem to it, SSH to the box, dial-up and have WIFI network ready. I am currently experimenting with automating whole process via HALd, but there is not much free time on my hands (first is paying my bills
). Anyway, I am holding my thumbs for You
Hi,
I suggest this router – http://www.netgear.com/Products/MobileBroadband/3gMobile/MBRN3000.aspx?detail=Specifications. It is quite easy to setup, it somehow gets faster speeds than just connecting my usb stick directly to my kubuntu netbook, and takes almost any usb stick. I am really happy with it.

“Compatible with cable modem and USB modem with mobile radio Internet connection (UMTS/HSPA)”
UMTS in 3G in Germany. AVM is well known in Germany for quality modems/routers.
The box is running a kind of linux – hacks are available to get a ssh connection. ☺

Opera Turbo!
It’s not FOSS but yeh
a fonera router can connect a 3G usb dongle
Something like this? (You should be able to find it cheaper…)

Will Nexus One phone work for you? You don’t have to pay for home Internet separately then. I am sceptic about the speed though
So, a little update.
I DONT HAVE TO GET 3G AFTER ALL!!!!!!!
Im very happy to say, after prodding people who actually have knowledge in the ISP, they were able to get me ADSL 2/2. Which, I have to say is fantastic and I am very happy!
So no need for the 3G connection after all.
