So I came up with an idea yesterday, and after a quick chat to Alan Bell, I think we will implement it.
We plan to put up a Planet site, similar to planet ubuntu, however with businesses who use/contribute to Ubuntu. This may be huge businesses like Dell, or tiny startups. (or anything in between).
The content will be information about what those companies do with Ubuntu. We want to avoid pricelists and offers, and focus more on progression of ubuntu and how it would be used.
The entry barrier could be quite low to begin with, adjustable if need be.
Im interested to hear what you all think, so comment away!
+1 Very good idea
Awesome
Yeah! About time businesses had their own forum! Just don’t let the advertisers get control. I have enough junk mail and phone calls already.
seems like a great idea which can lead to collaboration of businesses with the ubuntu community
I’m not sure if a seperate planet is really needed. The “mess” that happened with Dell is something that could happen to $joe_random blogger and their non-ubuntu articles, too.
The whole idea of planet ubuntu was to have ubuntu centric blog posts aggregated there – and I don’t see that much of a difference between the weekly Bug Day postings, the UWN (which one can’t read anyway on planet but has to follow an extra link) or a company blog. As long as it stays on topic my personal opinion is that it can also stay on planet.ubuntu.
Keep in mind that the complaints did come up because there wasn’t a single mentioning of ubuntu, free software or anything linux related in the Dell posts, not because it were a company’s blog from the start. The wiki page PlanetUbuntu is pretty clear on what belongs there, and other feeds should get removed likewise if they deviate as much as the Dell posts.
Thanks,
Rhonda
I like the idea. Maybe an another Planet could be created too collecting posts of independent, ubuntu-related blogs like OMG! Ubuntu! and WebUpd8. We did something similar in Hungary, and people seem to like it.
That sounds good
Great idea! Blogs syndicated there could also be syndicated on Planet Ubuntu if/when approved- but focusing on business elsewhere will be interesting for those who *only* would want to read about such subjects.
This sounds like a great idea. Great way to form a tighter community and awareness for Ubuntu.
