So you thought Amarok was the “only thing worth considering”? Think again.
Enter Tomahawk.
I recently came across Leo Franchi’s blog post and discovered a brilliant new music player. Its not yet packaged for Ubuntu, as some of the libraries still need packaging – hopefully we can have it sorted in time for Oneiric.
I’m not going to repeat his blog post – you can go read it yourself or take a look at the tomahawk website. However, in the short time I have had to play with this, its impressed me immensely. It allows sharing of music and playlists with friends through twitter and jabber, as well as music discovery through the same means. You can scrobble to last.fm, and loads more – I’m still finding the features out
In anycase, its cross platform, available for Linux, Windows and Mac and a Android player is “being worked on” (So Ive been told).
If you want to help out with development or just have a question, feel free to join us on IRC – #tomahawk on freenode
See you there!
Oh, almost forgot – the obligatory screenshot – stolen from Leos blog :=)

It looks very interesting. I heard Canonical plans to put Qt applications in the future Ubuntu releases. It will be great if this player will replace bloated banshee. Such change will remove entire mono from Ubuntu.
“So you thought Amarok was the “only thing worth considering”? Think again.”
No, the only thing worth considering is Clementine. Amarok has been knocked out a long time ago.
“Enter Tomahawk.”
I just compiled it, and got a segfault when I started it. So, this ain’t worth considering, either.
These are the facts, and they are on the table, sir.
Bartolomé, If you could join #tomahawk the guys there can try help fix your bug – it really is worth it. I’m pretty sure its only a condition on your machine – it works very well here.
Bartolomé, I’d love to see the backtrace of the crash. Keep in mind we’ve just hit 0.0.1, so obviously there might still be a few things that we need to fix or simply don’t know about yet
Thanks in advance,
muesli
I’m getting a bit worried by the number of Cool media players out there. for K4 we have Amarok, Bangarang, Clementine, and now, Tomahawk. the features of tomahawk could not be integrated in another player? I have here installed Amarok & bangarang, I do prefer bangarang for some stuff, Amarok for other. and now I’m gonna test tomahawk to see if it’s worth a try ( yes, keeping in mind that it’s 0.1 version.
)

They also all have different focuses. For example, Tomahawk is *not* a KDE-specific player. We optionally depend on KDE, and have OSX and Windows binaries that are pure Qt.
To the devs: the player looks nice, but only looks, because I can’t install it. I only need some (deb) binaries. I don’t know how to compile, don’t want to loose time compiling, we are not still in the XX century, bla bla…
@Tomaz
And how many players are on Windows? Come one, any body can make the player he wants or join another project.
